Why do we test the Book of Mormon?

“Every word of God is flawless; He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him. Do not add to His words, or He will rebuke you and prove you a liar.” Proverbs 30:5-6

It is impossible for anyone to know absolute truth without a foundational source. Without a standard of perfection to measure all teachings against, it would be impossible to test truth from falsehoods.

The members of Main Street Church hold the Bible as the infallible Word of God. It is our source of absolute truth and our standard. Therefore, anything added to God’s words through human "wisdom" can be disproven. Our commitment is to live not by our own opinions, nor those of men, but by God’s instructions. Therefore our motivation for testing the Book of Mormon comes from the following Scriptures:

“Test everything. Hold on to the good. Avoid every kind of evil.” 1 Thessalonians 5:21

The only way we can distinguish between good and evil is by testing every teaching against the teachings of the Bible.

“Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.” Acts 17:11

The Bible calls the Bereans "noble" because they tested the teachings that they heard against the scriptures. We believe that we are to do no less, and by doing so are in obedience to God's word.

“But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent’s cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ. For if someone comes to you and preaches a Jesus other than the Jesus we preached, or if you receive a different spirit from the one you received, or a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it easily enough…For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, masquerading as apostles of Christ. And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. It is not surprising, then, if his servants masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions deserve.” 2 Corinthians 11:3-4 & 13-15

We strive to test every “Jesus Christ” we hear preached to make sure he is the same Jesus Christ preached in the Bible; we strive to test every word from every prophet to make sure what they teach comes true and that it is in line with the teachings of the Bible...every gospel to make sure it is the gospel message of the Bible...every spirit to make sure it is the Holy Spirit of God as taught in the Bible. We test the teachings and the motives of those who appear righteous to make sure that they are not deceitful workmen who are merely masquerading as servants of righteousness.

“I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you by the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel—which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let him be eternally condemned! As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let him be eternally condemned!” Galatians 1:6-10

Our goal is to present evidence that the Book of Mormon does not pass the test of preaching the same gospel as the Bible. This is simply because it is a different gospel, “another testament of Jesus Christ,” than the gospel taught in the Bible. Even if an angel from heaven did appear to Joseph Smith, the Bible instructs us not to accept his gospel message because it is different than the gospel of the Bible. It is not for our sake, but for the sake of the LDS members that we are turning to physical evidence to support our claim that the Book of Mormon is a false gospel.

“As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately. ‘Tell us,” they said, ‘when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?’ Jesus answered: ‘Watch out that no one deceives you. For many will come in My name, claiming, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will deceive many…For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and miracles to deceive even the elect—if that were possible. See, I have told you ahead of time.’” Matthew 24:3-5, 24, 25

Joseph Smith fails the test of a true prophet because the Christ he proclaims is a different Christ than the Christ of the Bible. We believe the Book of Mormon teaches one of the false Christs that the Biblical Jesus Christ warned His disciples about. We believe that Mormons are part of ‘the many’ who have been deceived. We are therefore testing the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon -- if it is a false document it cannot possibly reveal the true Jesus Christ. The true Christ cannot be revealed in a false gospel!

“But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them—bringing swift destruction on themselves. Many will follow their shameful ways and will bring the way of truth into disrepute. In their greed these teachers will exploit you with stories they have made up. Their condemnation has long been hanging over them, and their destruction has not been sleeping.” 2 Peter 2:1-3

Joseph Smith fails the test as a true prophet and teacher of God because he introduced destructive heresies, such as the teaching that a mere man can become like God. This denies “the sovereign Lord” who is the only true God, the Creator and Ruler of all things. We believe that the Book of Mormon is a made-up story with the purpose of exploiting would-be believers of it. Our goal in interviewing experts, professionals, and scientists is to establish that it is indeed an exploitive invention.

“Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.” 1 John 4:1

Because Joseph Smith fails the test, so does the spirit he bears testimony to. We fully believe that many Mormons have had experiences that are beyond the physical. We have also tested these experiences and found that they are not consistent with the ministry of the Holy Spirit taught in the Bible. The Bible teaches that demonic spirits influence people. These spirits can only be effectively defeated only by the power of God. The above Scripture warns believers to test every spirit specifically “because many false prophets have gone out into the world.” We are testing the Book of Mormon because if it proves to be false, then the spirit that bears witness to it cannot possibly be from God.

“Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life and only a few find it. Watch out for false prophets. They come in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. By their fruit you will recognize them.” Matthew 7:13-16

We believe that Joseph Smith is one of the false prophets that Jesus is warning about. Jesus also says that many will follow such false prophets through the wide gate leading to destruction. By proving the Book of Mormon false, we pray that some will turn from this wide road to destruction and be one of the few that find the narrow gate taught in the Bible that truly leads to eternal life!

“This will happen when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven in blazing fire with His powerful angels. He will punish those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. They will be punished with everlasting destruction and shut out from the presence of the Lord” 2 Thessalonians 1:7-10

If the Book of Mormon proves false, then it is impossible to know God by means of it. If the Book of Mormon proves to be a false gospel, then it is impossible for anyone to understand and obey the true gospel of the Lord Jesus through it. This is why we are testing the Book of Mormon by testing its historical claims. We are motivated by the Bible’s teaching that nothing less than the eternity of Mormons is at stake! We do everything in the hope that Mormons might discover the true knowledge of God. Acceptance of the true gospel of the Lord Jesus found in the Bible will allow anyone who believes to escape "everlasting destruction.”

“My heart’s desire and prayer to God for the Israelites is that they may be saved. For I can testify about them that they are zealous for God, but their zeal is not based on knowledge.” Romans 10:1-2

Our heart’s desire and prayer to God for Mormons is that they may be saved. We can testify that LDS members are zealous for God, but that their zeal is not based on the true Biblical knowledge of God.

“For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God”. 2 Corinthians 10:4-5

We are not fighting against LDS people; we are fighting against the false teachings of Joseph Smith and the heresies of the Book of Mormon. We believe that these teachings are strongholds set up against the true knowledge of God found in the Bible. We believe they need to be torn down, using the truth of God’s Word, so that many might be saved.

Mormon Apostle Orson Pratt declared:

“If true, (the Book of Mormon) is one of the most important messages ever sent from God to man. If false, it is one of the most cunning, wicked, bold, deep-laid impositions ever palmed upon the world, calculated to deceive and ruin millions who sincerely receive it as the Word of God, and will suppose themselves built upon the rock of truth, until they are plunged, with their families, into hopeless despair.”

Please! It is extremely important for LDS members to test the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon. The consequences for you and your family are eternal.

“Jesus said, ‘If you hold to My teaching, you are really My disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.’” John 8:31-32
